How to Get an International Driving Permit in Finland?
An International Driving Permit is a translation of your national driving license. The IDP allows motorists to drive vehicles in foreign countries. While driving abroad, you must always have your IDP along with your national license at all times.

There are two models of international driving permits available in Finland. The models are defined in the international road traffic conventions: the Geneva 1949 and Vienna 1968 conventions.
There are three ways to obtain an international driving permit:
- Order the IDP with the application developed by Autoliitto. Download the Autoliitto app from either the App Store or the Google Play Store for free. The application can be found by searching for: kansainvälinen ajokortti (International Driving Permit).

- Order the IDP by mail or
- order the IDP at the office of Autoliitto, you will need:
- a passport photo: 1 pc, black and white or colour, up to 6 months old, maximum size 4 x 5 cm. No electronic images.
- a photocopy of both sides of your valid driving licence

Driving in Finland with a foreign driving licence
A valid driving licence issued in an EU or EEA Member State always entitles you to drive in Finland. Check this page Traficom

If visitors are required to have an IDP in Finland, they must make sure they obtain an IDP in their home country or country of residence before they travel.
The IDP, which is valid for 1 or 3 years, proves that you hold a valid driver’s license in your country of residence. It will also help protect you and your family in the event of an accidental and/or vehicle damage while driving abroad, or the loss of legal identification such as a passport. The IDP is recognized all over the world and is available in 10 different languages in order to help overcome language barriers.
Similarly, (Finland) nationals and residents who wish to drive abroad, need to apply for an IDP via the (Autoliitto).
- Requirements
According to the Finnish Driving Licence Act (386/2011), an international driving permit can be obtained in Finland by a person who has:
- a valid driving licence issued in Finland and permanent residence in Finland
- a valid driving licence issued in Finland and his/her permanent place of residence is abroad in a country other than an EU or EEA country
- a valid driving licence issued in another EU or EEA country and permanent residence in Finland (note the long processing time)
